It is with a heavy heart that we share some unfortunate news. The Board of Directors met this week, and after much research, discussion and reflection, it decided that we will not run Camp Micah this summer.
For many of you, this decision will be a major disappointment. It is certainly a disappointment for us, the staff, who love the camp and the time we have been able to spend with you conspiring for a world of peace and social justice. Please know that this decision was not taken lightly.
To say that these times we are living in are unprecedented, confusing, and hard is an understatement. It is very likely that you are reading this after being stuck at home, away from your friends, clubs and teams for more than 55 days. You probably never thought that you would actually miss going to school. And the idea of also missing out on an opportunity to get away for a week with a nurturing, supportive community that makes you feel like you can be yourself, must make this whole crazy situation feel even more challenging and overwhelming. Please know that we feel the same and are also disappointed and very sorry to have come to this decision.
We put a lot of time into examining what will be required of camp communities if they are able to open this summer. We also discussed our ability to manage the extra needs for health and safety. We also realized, with difficulty, that IF we would be allowed to run camp (which we would not officially know for a while), we would be very much behind schedule in our fundraising, promoting, planning, and registering participants. The uncertainty of this time and the requirement for all of the staff to work from home has meant that we have not been able to start any of this work. Given this, and in spite of our disappointment, we felt we could not go ahead and effectively plan a camp under the circumstances.
But that is not the end because we do have some good news!
As an alternative to running a regular week long camp in August, we will be planning some smaller community events and gatherings for Camp Micah participants, staff, and community throughout the summer. These will likely occur online. However, there is potential that we will be able to host some small local physical gatherings if things open up and it is safe to do so.
It is absolutely our goal to continue to stay connected with all of you, and continue to strengthen the Camp Micah community. So stay tuned for what’s coming up! It is definitely also our goal to come back from this pandemic as a stronger community ready to plan for an incredible camp for 2021!
Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued passion and commitment to Camp Micah. Take care, reach out and stay in touch! We’ll see you this summer.
With much peace and love,
On behalf of the staff, Board of Directors, and community of Camp Micah: Leadership for Peace and Justice
